A Guide to Selecting the Best Window Film For Sun Blocking

Choosing the right window film for sun blocking can make a big difference in your comfort, energy savings, and even the longevity of your furniture and flooring. Window films are designed to reduce the amount of sunlight and heat that enters your space, helping to keep rooms cooler and protect against UV damage. When shopping for window film, it's important to understand the key features and how they relate to your specific needs, such as the amount of sunlight your windows receive, your privacy preferences, and whether you want a clear or tinted look.

UV Protection Percentage

UV protection percentage tells you how much of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays the film can block. This is important because UV rays can cause fading of furniture, flooring, and artwork, and can also be harmful to your skin. Films typically range from blocking about 80% to 99% of UV rays. If you have valuable items near your windows or are concerned about skin health, look for films with higher UV protection. For general use, a film that blocks around 90% is usually sufficient, but for maximum protection, aim for 99%.

Visible Light Transmission (VLT)

Visible Light Transmission, or VLT, measures how much natural light passes through the film into your room. A higher VLT means more light comes in, while a lower VLT means the room will be dimmer. Films can range from very clear (high VLT, around 70% or more) to quite dark (low VLT, around 10-30%). If you want to keep your room bright, choose a film with a higher VLT. If you prefer a dimmer, more private space, or need to reduce glare, a lower VLT might be better.

Heat Rejection

Heat rejection refers to how much of the sun’s heat the film can block from entering your space. This is important for keeping rooms cooler and reducing air conditioning costs. Films can block anywhere from 30% to over 80% of solar heat. If your windows get a lot of direct sunlight or you live in a hot climate, look for films with higher heat rejection. For less sunny areas, a moderate level may be enough.

Privacy Level

Privacy level describes how much the film obscures the view from outside. Some films are nearly invisible and offer little privacy, while others are reflective or frosted to prevent people from seeing in. If privacy is a concern, especially for ground-floor rooms or bathrooms, choose a film with a higher privacy rating. If you just want to block sun but keep your view, opt for a clear or lightly tinted film.

Installation Type

Installation type refers to how the film is applied to your window. Some films are static cling, which means they stick without adhesive and are easy to remove or reposition. Others use adhesive for a more permanent application. If you’re renting or want to change films seasonally, static cling is a good choice. For a long-term solution, adhesive films are more durable but harder to remove.

Appearance (Tint and Reflectivity)

The appearance of the film includes its color tint and whether it has a reflective or mirrored finish. Tinted films can range from almost clear to dark gray or bronze, affecting both the look of your windows and the amount of light and heat blocked. Reflective films can give a mirror-like appearance from the outside, which increases privacy but may not suit every aesthetic. Choose the appearance based on your style preferences and how much you want to change the look of your windows.
