Detection Technology (VLF vs. PI)

Lower frequencies (around 3-8 kHz) are better for finding larger, deeper objects, while higher frequencies (10-20 kHz or more) are more sensitive to small, shallow items like tiny jewelry. Some detectors offer adjustable frequencies, letting you switch based on what you’re searching for. If you’re after small, shallow targets, look for a higher frequency. For larger, deeper objects, a lower frequency is better. Adjustable frequency is useful if you want flexibility.

Search Coil Size and Shape

The search coil is the round or oval part at the end of the detector that you sweep over the ground or underwater surface. Coil size affects how deep the detector can search and how much area it covers. Larger coils can search deeper and cover more ground, but they can be harder to maneuver in tight spaces. Smaller coils are better for pinpointing small objects and working in rocky or cluttered areas. Coil shape also matters—round coils are common and good for general use, while elliptical coils can help you search in narrow spaces. Choose a coil size and shape based on where you’ll be searching and what you hope to find.

Weight and Ergonomics

Weight and ergonomics refer to how heavy the detector is and how comfortable it is to hold and use, especially for long periods. Underwater detectors can be heavier than land models because they need to be waterproof and durable. Lighter detectors are easier to handle, especially if you’ll be using them for hours or carrying them while swimming or diving. Look for a detector with a comfortable grip and adjustable shaft length so you can use it without straining your arm or wrist. If you plan to dive, make sure the detector is easy to maneuver underwater.

Audio and Visual Target Identification

Audio and visual target identification features help you understand what kind of metal you’ve found before you dig. Some detectors use different tones or display information on a screen to indicate whether the target is likely to be iron, gold, or another metal. This can save you time and effort by helping you ignore unwanted items. If you want to focus on finding valuable objects and avoid digging up trash, look for a detector with clear target identification features. If you’re happy to dig everything, this may be less important.

Battery Life and Power Source

Battery life determines how long you can use the detector before needing to recharge or replace the batteries. Underwater detectors often use rechargeable batteries or standard replaceable ones. Longer battery life is important if you plan to spend a lot of time searching or if you’ll be far from a power source.
