A Guide to Selecting the Best Under Cabinet Range Hoods
Choosing the right under-cabinet range hood is important for keeping your kitchen air clean and free from smoke, grease, and odors. The best range hood for you will depend on your cooking habits, kitchen size, and the layout of your cabinets. Understanding the key features will help you make a choice that fits your needs and ensures a comfortable cooking environment.
Ventilation Type
Ventilation type refers to how the range hood removes air from your kitchen. There are two main types: ducted (vented) and ductless (recirculating). Ducted hoods push air outside through a vent, which is very effective at removing smoke and odors. Ductless hoods filter the air and recirculate it back into the kitchen, which is easier to install but less effective for heavy cooking. If you cook often or use a lot of oil and spices, a ducted system is usually better. If venting outside isn’t possible, a ductless hood with good filters can still help.
Airflow (CFM)
CFM stands for cubic feet per minute and measures how much air the hood can move. Higher CFM means more powerful ventilation. For light cooking, a lower CFM (around 150-250) is usually enough. For regular or heavy cooking, especially with frying or strong spices, look for a higher CFM (300-600 or more). Match the CFM to your stove size and how much you cook—more cooking and larger stoves need more airflow.
Size (Width)
The width of the range hood should match or be slightly wider than your cooktop or range. Common sizes are 24, 30, and 36 inches. A hood that is too small won’t capture all the smoke and steam, while one that is too large may not fit under your cabinets. Measure your cooking area and choose a hood that covers the entire width for the best performance.
Noise Level
Noise level is measured in sones or decibels and tells you how loud the hood will be when running. Lower numbers mean quieter operation. If you have an open kitchen or are sensitive to noise, look for a hood with a lower noise rating, especially at the speeds you’ll use most often. Some hoods are quieter at low speeds but get louder at higher settings, so consider how much noise you’re comfortable with during cooking.
Filter Type
Filters trap grease and, in ductless models, also help remove odors. Metal filters (like aluminum or stainless steel) are durable and can be washed and reused. Charcoal filters are used in ductless hoods to help with odors but need to be replaced regularly. If you want easy maintenance, look for washable metal filters. If you need odor control and can’t vent outside, make sure the hood supports charcoal filters.
Lighting
Most range hoods come with built-in lights to help you see your cooking surface. The type and brightness of the lights can vary—some use LED, halogen, or incandescent bulbs. LED lights are energy-efficient and last longer. If you often cook at night or want better visibility, look for a hood with bright, adjustable lighting.
Control Type
Controls can be push buttons, sliders, touch panels, or even remote controls. Simple mechanical controls are easy to use and reliable, while touch panels can offer more features and a modern look. Choose a control style that feels comfortable and convenient for you, especially if you’ll be adjusting settings often while cooking.
