Speed Settings
Turntables can play records at different speeds, usually 33 1/3, 45, and sometimes 78 RPM (revolutions per minute). Most modern records play at 33 1/3 or 45 RPM, while older records may use 78 RPM. If you only plan to play standard LPs and singles, a turntable with 33 1/3 and 45 RPM is sufficient. If you have or plan to collect older 78 RPM records, make sure your turntable supports this speed. The materials used in a turntable affect its durability and sound quality. Heavier, well-built turntables with solid platters and sturdy bases help reduce vibrations and improve playback. Lightweight or plastic models may be more portable but can pick up more unwanted noise. If you want the best sound and plan to keep your turntable in one place, look for a model with a solid, heavy base and quality materials. If you need something portable or space-saving, a lighter model might be more suitable.
Automatic vs. Manual Operation
Turntables can be fully manual, semi-automatic, or fully automatic. Manual turntables require you to place the tonearm on the record and lift it off when finished. Semi-automatic models return the tonearm at the end of a record, while fully automatic ones handle both starting and stopping. Manual turntables are often preferred by enthusiasts for their simplicity and control, but automatic options are more convenient, especially if you want an easy, hands-off experience. Consider how much involvement you want in the playback process when choosing.
Connectivity Options
Modern turntables may offer various ways to connect to speakers or other devices, such as traditional RCA outputs, USB ports for digitizing records, or Bluetooth for wireless playback. If you want to connect to a computer or digitize your vinyl, look for a USB output. For wireless listening, Bluetooth is a good feature. If you have a traditional stereo system, standard RCA outputs are usually all you need. Think about how you want to use your turntable and what devices you want to connect it to.
