A Guide to Selecting the Best Turkey Broadheads

Choosing the right broadhead for turkey hunting is crucial because turkeys are small, quick, and have a relatively small vital area. The right broadhead can make the difference between a clean, ethical harvest and a missed opportunity. When shopping for turkey broadheads, it's important to understand the different types and features available, and to match them to your hunting style, bow setup, and the specific challenges of turkey hunting.

Broadhead Type

Broadheads for turkey hunting generally come in two main types: mechanical (expandable) and fixed-blade. Mechanical broadheads have blades that deploy upon impact, creating a larger cutting diameter, which is helpful for turkeys because it increases your margin for error and can deliver more shock to the bird. Fixed-blade broadheads have blades that are always exposed and are known for their reliability and penetration. For turkeys, mechanical broadheads are often preferred because turkeys are not as tough as larger game, and the larger wound channel can help ensure a quick, humane kill. However, if you hunt in areas with thick brush or want maximum reliability, fixed-blade broadheads are a solid choice. Your choice should depend on your confidence in shot placement, your bow's draw weight, and the typical distances you shoot.

Cutting Diameter

Cutting diameter refers to the width of the wound channel the broadhead creates. For turkey hunting, a larger cutting diameter (often 2 inches or more) is generally preferred because it increases your chances of hitting vital organs or breaking the spine, which is important given the small target area on a turkey. Smaller cutting diameters (around 1 to 1.5 inches) are more common in broadheads designed for larger game where penetration is more critical. If you are a precise shooter and aim for the head or neck, a smaller diameter may suffice, but for body shots, a larger cutting diameter is usually better.

Blade Count

The number of blades on a broadhead can affect both the size of the wound and the broadhead's flight characteristics. Most turkey broadheads have two to four blades. More blades can create a larger wound and increase your chances of a quick kill, but they may also affect how the broadhead flies, especially at longer distances. If you shoot at close range, more blades can be beneficial, but if you need maximum accuracy at longer distances, fewer blades may help maintain better flight stability.

Blade Sharpness and Durability

Sharpness is crucial for ensuring a clean cut and quick kill, while durability ensures the broadhead can withstand impact with bone or tough feathers. Some broadheads come with replaceable blades, making it easy to keep them sharp, while others are designed for single use. If you hunt frequently or want to reuse your broadheads, look for models with replaceable or resharpenable blades. If you only hunt occasionally, a single-use broadhead may be sufficient.

Weight

Broadhead weight is usually measured in grains, with common weights being 100 or 125 grains. The right weight depends on your arrow setup and bow draw weight. Heavier broadheads can provide more momentum and penetration, but for turkeys, penetration is less of a concern than for larger game. Most hunters use 100-grain broadheads for turkeys, as they offer a good balance of flight and impact. Make sure the broadhead weight matches your arrow and bow specifications for safe and accurate shooting.

Special Features (Decapitation/Guillotine Heads)

Some broadheads are specifically designed for head and neck shots on turkeys, often called decapitation or guillotine heads. These have very large, exposed blades and are intended to instantly kill a turkey by severing the head or neck. They require precise shooting and are best used at close range. If you are confident in your accuracy and prefer head shots, these broadheads can be very effective. If you prefer body shots or are less confident in your aim, stick with traditional mechanical or fixed-blade broadheads.
