A Guide to Selecting the Best Striper Lures

Choosing the right striper lure can make a big difference in your fishing success. Stripers, or striped bass, are known for their aggressive feeding habits, but they can also be picky depending on water conditions, time of year, and the type of baitfish present. When picking a lure, it's important to consider where and how you'll be fishing, as well as the behavior of the fish. Understanding the key features of lures will help you select the best option for your needs.

Lure Type

Lure type refers to the general style or category of the lure, such as topwater, jig, swimbait, or crankbait. This is important because different types of lures work best in different situations and water conditions. For example, topwater lures are great for shallow water or when stripers are feeding near the surface, while jigs and swimbaits are better for deeper water. To choose the right type, think about where the stripers are likely to be and how active they are. If you see fish breaking the surface, try a topwater lure. If they're deeper, go for a jig or swimbait.

Lure Size

Lure size is the overall length and weight of the lure. This matters because it should match the size of the baitfish that stripers are currently feeding on. Smaller lures (3-5 inches) are good for early season or when baitfish are small, while larger lures (6-9 inches or more) are better when targeting bigger stripers or when larger baitfish are present. To pick the right size, observe the local baitfish and try to match your lure to their size. If you're unsure, starting with a medium size is a safe bet.

Lure Color

Lure color is the pattern and shade of the lure. This is important because it affects how visible and attractive the lure is to stripers in different water conditions. Bright or flashy colors work well in murky or stained water, while natural or subtle colors are better in clear water. To choose the right color, consider the water clarity and the color of local baitfish. If the water is clear, go for natural colors like silver, white, or shad patterns. In cloudy or muddy water, try chartreuse, bright yellow, or other high-visibility colors.

Action

Action refers to the way the lure moves in the water. Some lures have a tight, fast wiggle, while others have a wide, slow wobble or a darting motion. The action is important because it can trigger strikes from stripers depending on their mood and feeding behavior. Fast, erratic actions are good when fish are aggressive, while slower, more subtle actions work when fish are less active. To pick the right action, experiment with different retrieves and see what gets the most bites, or ask local anglers what’s working.

Hook Quality

Hook quality refers to the sharpness, strength, and durability of the hooks attached to the lure. This is important because stripers are strong fish and can easily bend or break weak hooks. High-quality, sharp hooks increase your chances of hooking and landing fish. When choosing a lure, check that the hooks are sturdy and sharp. If not, consider replacing them with better ones. For most anglers, strong, corrosion-resistant hooks are a good choice, especially if fishing in saltwater.
