A Guide to Selecting the Best Shallow Depth Microwave
Choosing a shallow-depth microwave is a smart move if you have limited counter space or a compact kitchen. The key is to find a model that fits your available space while still meeting your cooking needs. When shopping, focus on the dimensions, capacity, power, and features that match your lifestyle. Understanding the main specifications will help you make a confident and practical choice.
Depth
Depth refers to how far the microwave extends from the wall or the back of the unit to the front. This is the most important spec for a shallow-depth microwave, as it determines whether the appliance will fit in your intended space, especially on narrow countertops or shelves. Shallow-depth microwaves typically range from about 12 to 16 inches deep, while standard models are often deeper. If you have very limited space, look for models at the lower end of this range. Measure your available space carefully and allow for some extra room for ventilation and door opening.
Capacity
Capacity is usually measured in cubic feet and tells you how much food you can fit inside the microwave. Shallow-depth models often have a smaller capacity, usually between 0.5 and 1.0 cubic feet. If you mostly reheat small meals, make popcorn, or cook for one or two people, a smaller capacity will be sufficient. If you need to fit larger plates or cook bigger portions, look for the largest capacity that still fits your space.
Wattage (Power)
Wattage indicates how powerful the microwave is, affecting how quickly and evenly it cooks food. Most shallow-depth microwaves have wattages between 600 and 1000 watts. Lower wattage means slower cooking, which is fine for simple reheating, while higher wattage is better for cooking meals or defrosting quickly. Consider your typical use: if you just need to warm up leftovers, lower wattage is fine; if you want to cook or defrost larger items, aim for higher wattage within the shallow-depth options.
Turntable Size
The turntable is the rotating glass plate inside the microwave that helps food cook evenly. In shallow-depth models, the turntable is usually smaller, often around 9 to 11 inches in diameter. Make sure the turntable is large enough for your most commonly used plates or bowls. If you use oversized dishes, check the turntable size before buying.
Control Panel and Features
The control panel includes the buttons and display you use to operate the microwave. Some shallow-depth models have basic manual dials, while others offer digital controls, preset cooking modes, and sensor cooking. If you prefer simplicity, a basic model may be best. If you want convenience, look for features like one-touch cooking, defrost settings, or child lock. Think about which features will make your daily use easier and more enjoyable.
Installation Type
Shallow-depth microwaves can be countertop models or designed for built-in or over-the-range installation. Countertop models are easy to move and set up, while built-in or over-the-range models save counter space but may require professional installation. Choose the type that fits your kitchen layout and your willingness to install or move the appliance.
