A Guide to Selecting the Best Pure Manuka Honey
Choosing pure Manuka honey can be a bit overwhelming because of the different grades, labels, and claims you’ll see on jars. The key is to understand what makes Manuka honey unique and how to identify genuine, high-quality products. Focus on the main quality indicators, understand what they mean, and think about how you plan to use the honey—whether for general eating, health benefits, or topical use. This will help you pick the best fit for your needs.
UMF/MGO Rating
The UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) or MGO (Methylglyoxal) rating is a measure of the honey’s antibacterial strength, which is what makes Manuka honey special. Higher numbers mean stronger antibacterial properties. UMF usually ranges from 5+ to 20+ and MGO from about 100+ to 800+ or more. For everyday sweetening or eating, lower ratings (UMF 5+ to 10+ or MGO 100+ to 250+) are fine. For more targeted health uses, like soothing a sore throat or wound care, higher ratings (UMF 15+ or MGO 400+ and above) are preferred. Choose the rating based on how much you value the medicinal benefits versus just enjoying the taste.
Purity and Authenticity
Purity means the honey is truly Manuka and not mixed with other types of honey. Authentic Manuka honey should have clear labeling, often with certification marks from trusted organizations. Look for labels that mention 'monofloral' (from mostly Manuka flowers) and check for third-party testing or certification. This is important because only pure Manuka honey has the unique properties people seek. If you want the real benefits, always check for proof of authenticity and avoid products with vague or misleading labels.
Raw vs. Processed
Raw Manuka honey is minimally processed, meaning it retains more of its natural enzymes and nutrients. Processed honey may be heated or filtered, which can reduce some of its beneficial properties. If you want the most natural product with the highest potential health benefits, look for raw Manuka honey. If you’re mainly using it as a sweetener and don’t mind some processing, regular Manuka honey is still a good choice.
Texture and Taste
Manuka honey can vary in texture from smooth and creamy to thick and grainy, and the taste can range from mildly sweet to earthy and slightly bitter. Texture and taste are mostly about personal preference. If you like spreading honey on toast, a creamier texture might be best. If you’re adding it to tea or recipes, texture matters less. Taste can also guide your choice—if you’re new to Manuka honey, you might prefer a milder flavor.
Packaging and Storage
Manuka honey is sensitive to light and heat, so packaging matters. Dark, opaque jars help protect the honey’s quality. Proper storage keeps the honey fresh and preserves its beneficial properties. If you plan to use the honey slowly, choose packaging that will keep it well-sealed and protected from sunlight. This ensures you get the most out of your purchase over time.
