A Guide to Selecting the Best Outdoor Sump Pump

Choosing the right outdoor sump pump is essential for protecting your property from flooding and water damage. The right pump will efficiently remove water from areas like basements, yards, or crawl spaces, especially during heavy rains or after snow melts. Pump Type

There are two main types of sump pumps: submersible and pedestal. Submersible pumps are designed to be placed underwater in the sump pit, making them quieter and more efficient for heavy-duty use. Pedestal pumps have the motor above the pit, making them easier to service and generally longer-lasting, but they can be noisier and less powerful. If you need to handle large volumes of water or want a quieter operation, a submersible pump is usually better. For lighter use or easier maintenance, a pedestal pump may be sufficient.

Horsepower (HP)

Horsepower measures the strength of the pump's motor and determines how much water it can move. Common values range from 1/4 HP to 1 HP. Lower horsepower pumps (1/4 to 1/3 HP) are suitable for areas with minor water issues, while higher horsepower (1/2 HP and above) is better for larger spaces or areas prone to heavy flooding. To choose the right horsepower, consider the size of the area you need to protect and how much water typically accumulates during storms.

Flow Rate (Gallons Per Hour or GPH)

Flow rate tells you how much water the pump can move in an hour, usually measured in gallons per hour (GPH). Lower flow rates (up to 2,000 GPH) are fine for small pits or occasional water, while higher rates (3,000 GPH and above) are needed for larger or frequently flooded areas. Think about how quickly water collects in your space and pick a pump with a flow rate that can keep up during peak conditions.

Head Height (Maximum Lift)

Head height, or maximum lift, is the highest vertical distance the pump can move water. If your discharge point is far above the sump pit, you need a pump with a higher head height. For most homes, a head height of 10-15 feet is enough, but if you need to pump water up a steep slope or to a higher level, look for pumps with greater lift capacity. Match the pump's head height to your specific installation needs.

Switch Type

Sump pumps use different types of switches to turn on and off automatically. The most common are float switches, diaphragm switches, and electronic sensors. Float switches are reliable and easy to understand, while electronic sensors can be more precise but may be sensitive to debris. Choose a switch type that matches your maintenance preferences and the likelihood of debris in your sump pit.

Material and Build Quality

The materials used in the pump affect its durability and resistance to corrosion. Cast iron and stainless steel pumps are more durable and suitable for outdoor or harsh environments, while plastic pumps are lighter and less expensive but may not last as long. If your pump will be exposed to the elements or used frequently, opt for a model with robust construction.

Power Source

Most sump pumps are powered by electricity, but some have battery backup or can run on water pressure. Electric pumps are reliable as long as you have power, but a battery backup is important if you live in an area prone to power outages during storms. Consider your local weather and power reliability when choosing the right power source for your pump.
