A Guide to Selecting the Best Micro Clover Seed

Choosing the right micro-clover seed is important for creating a healthy, low-maintenance, and attractive lawn or ground cover. Micro-clover is a smaller-leafed variety of clover that blends well with grass, stays green, and requires less mowing and fertilizing than traditional lawns. When selecting micro-clover seed, it's important to understand the key characteristics that will affect how well it grows in your specific environment and how it will look and perform over time.

Seed Purity

Seed purity refers to the percentage of the seed mix that is actually micro-clover, as opposed to other seeds or inert material. High purity means you are getting mostly micro-clover seeds, which leads to more consistent and predictable results. Purity is usually expressed as a percentage. For most home lawns, a higher purity (above 90%) is ideal because it ensures that your lawn will be dominated by micro-clover rather than weeds or other plants. If you are overseeding into an existing lawn, slightly lower purity may be acceptable, but for new lawns, always look for the highest purity you can find.

Germination Rate

Germination rate tells you what percentage of the seeds are expected to sprout under ideal conditions. This is important because a higher germination rate means more of the seeds you plant will actually grow, leading to a fuller and healthier lawn. Germination rates are usually listed as a percentage. Rates above 85% are considered good. If you want quick and reliable coverage, choose seeds with a high germination rate. If you are patient and willing to overseed, a slightly lower rate may be acceptable, but you may need to use more seed.

Seed Coating

Some micro-clover seeds are coated with a layer of material that can include nutrients, inoculants, or substances to help retain moisture. Coated seeds can be easier to handle and may improve germination, especially in less-than-ideal soil. However, coated seeds are heavier, so you get fewer actual seeds per pound. If you are planting in poor soil or want to give your seeds the best start, coated seeds can be a good choice. If you have good soil and want maximum seed count, uncoated seeds may be better.

Variety or Cultivar

Micro-clover comes in different varieties or cultivars, each with slightly different characteristics such as leaf size, color, and growth habit. Some varieties are bred to stay smaller and blend better with grass, while others may be more robust or tolerant of certain conditions. If you want a lawn that looks more like traditional grass, choose a variety known for its small leaves and low growth. If you have challenging conditions like heavy foot traffic or shade, look for a variety that is known for its toughness or adaptability.

Adaptation to Climate

Not all micro-clover varieties perform equally well in all climates. Some are better suited to cooler, wetter regions, while others can handle heat and drought better. Check the seed packaging or supplier information for recommendations about climate suitability. If you live in a region with hot, dry summers, look for a drought-tolerant variety. If your area is cool and moist, most micro-clover types will do well, but you may want to avoid those bred specifically for heat.
