A Guide to Selecting the Best Gas Lawn Mowers

Choosing the right gas lawn mower can make yard work much easier and more efficient. The best mower for you depends on the size and type of your lawn, how much effort you want to put into mowing, and any special features you might need. Understanding the key specifications will help you match a mower to your needs, so you get a machine that’s comfortable to use and does a great job on your grass.

Engine Power (cc or HP)

Engine power, usually measured in cubic centimeters (cc) or horsepower (HP), tells you how strong the mower’s engine is. A higher number means the mower can handle tougher jobs, like thick or tall grass, and larger lawns. Smaller engines (around 140-160cc) are good for small, flat lawns with regular grass, while mid-range engines (160-190cc) suit medium lawns or slightly uneven terrain. Larger engines (over 190cc) are best for big yards, hilly areas, or if you often deal with wet or dense grass. Think about your lawn’s size and condition to decide how much power you really need.

Cutting Width

Cutting width is the size of the area the mower cuts in one pass, usually measured in inches. A wider cutting width (21-22 inches or more) means you can mow your lawn faster, which is helpful for bigger yards. Narrower widths (16-20 inches) are easier to maneuver and better for small lawns or areas with lots of obstacles. If you have a large, open yard, a wider mower saves time, but for tight spaces or lots of landscaping, a smaller width gives you more control.

Drive Type (Push vs. Self-Propelled)

Drive type refers to whether you need to push the mower yourself or if it moves forward on its own. Push mowers require more effort and are best for small, flat lawns. Self-propelled mowers use the engine to drive the wheels, making them much easier to use on larger or sloped lawns. If you want to save energy or have a hilly yard, self-propelled is a good choice. For simple, flat lawns, a push mower is lighter and often easier to store.

Deck Material

The deck is the part of the mower that covers the blade. Decks are usually made from steel, aluminum, or plastic. Steel decks are strong and durable but can rust if not cared for. Aluminum decks are lighter and don’t rust, but can be more expensive. Plastic decks are lightweight and rust-proof, but may not be as tough for heavy-duty use. If you want a long-lasting mower and don’t mind a bit of extra weight, steel is a solid choice. For easy handling and rust resistance, aluminum or plastic may be better.

Cutting Height Adjustment

Cutting height adjustment lets you choose how short or tall you want your grass. Most mowers offer several height settings, usually between 1 and 4 inches. Some mowers have a single lever to adjust all wheels at once, while others require you to adjust each wheel separately. If you like to change your grass height often or want to keep things simple, look for easy, single-lever adjustment. If you always mow at the same height, this feature may be less important.

Grass Clipping Options (Bagging, Mulching, Side Discharge)

Gas mowers can handle grass clippings in different ways: bagging collects clippings in a bag, mulching chops them up and returns them to the lawn, and side discharge spits them out the side. Bagging keeps your lawn tidy but means you’ll need to empty the bag. Mulching is good for lawn health, as it returns nutrients to the soil. Side discharge is quick and easy for large areas where clippings aren’t a concern. Think about how you want to deal with clippings and choose a mower that offers your preferred option, or one that can do all three for flexibility.

Starting System

The starting system is how you get the mower running. Traditional pull-starts require a strong pull on a cord, while some mowers offer electric start with a button or key. Electric start is easier, especially if you have trouble with pull cords, but may require charging a battery. If you want convenience and easy starting, look for electric start. If you don’t mind a bit of effort, a pull-start is simple and reliable.
