A Guide to Selecting the Best Furnace Filters

Choosing the right furnace filter is important for maintaining good air quality in your home and ensuring your heating system runs efficiently. The right filter can help trap dust, pollen, pet dander, and other particles, making the air cleaner and healthier to breathe. When picking a furnace filter, it's important to understand the different features and specifications so you can select one that matches your needs and your furnace's requirements.

Filter Size

Filter size refers to the length, width, and thickness of the filter, usually measured in inches. This is important because your furnace is designed to fit a specific size, and using the wrong size can lead to air bypassing the filter or the filter not fitting at all. Sizes are often printed on the old filter or listed in your furnace manual. To pick the right one, measure your existing filter or check your furnace’s documentation, and always use the exact size recommended.

MERV Rating

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, and it measures how effectively a filter captures particles. The scale typically ranges from 1 to 16, with higher numbers trapping smaller particles. Lower MERV ratings (1-4) capture only large particles and are suitable for basic dust protection. Mid-range (5-8) filters are good for most homes, capturing dust, pollen, and mold spores. Higher MERV ratings (9-12) are better for people with allergies or pets, while the highest ratings (13-16) are used in hospitals or for those with severe allergies. Choose a MERV rating based on your air quality needs, but make sure your furnace can handle higher ratings, as they can restrict airflow.

Filter Material

Furnace filters are made from different materials, such as fiberglass, pleated paper, or synthetic fibers. Fiberglass filters are basic and inexpensive, but they only catch larger particles. Pleated filters, made from paper or synthetic materials, have more surface area and can trap smaller particles, making them better for improving air quality. If you have allergies or pets, pleated filters are usually a better choice. Consider your air quality needs and how often you want to change the filter when choosing the material.

Disposable vs. Reusable

Some furnace filters are designed to be thrown away after use, while others can be washed and reused. Disposable filters are convenient and easy to replace, but they create more waste. Reusable filters can save money over time and are more environmentally friendly, but they require regular cleaning and maintenance. If you prefer less maintenance, disposable filters may be best, but if you want to reduce waste and don’t mind cleaning, reusable filters are a good option.

Change Frequency

How often you need to change or clean your filter depends on the type and your home environment. Some filters need to be replaced every month, while others can last up to six months. Homes with pets, smokers, or allergy sufferers may need more frequent changes. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations and consider your household’s needs to decide how often you should replace or clean your filter.
