A Guide to Selecting the Best Cocktail Shakers
Choosing the right cocktail shaker can make a big difference in your home bartending experience. The right shaker will help you mix drinks efficiently, prevent spills, and even add a touch of style to your bar setup. When picking a cocktail shaker, it's important to consider how often you'll use it, what types of drinks you like to make, and how comfortable you are with different designs. Understanding the key features will help you find a shaker that fits your needs and makes mixing drinks enjoyable and easy.
Type of Shaker
There are mainly two types of cocktail shakers: the Boston shaker and the Cobbler shaker. The Boston shaker consists of two parts (a metal tin and a mixing glass or another tin) and is favored by professionals for its speed and capacity, but it requires a separate strainer. The Cobbler shaker has three parts (a metal tin, a built-in strainer, and a cap) and is easier for beginners because it’s less likely to spill and includes a strainer. If you’re new to mixing drinks or want something simple, the Cobbler is a good choice. If you want to make drinks quickly or in larger quantities, or if you’re comfortable with a bit of practice, the Boston shaker might suit you better.
Material
Cocktail shakers are usually made from stainless steel, glass, or sometimes plastic. Stainless steel is the most popular because it chills drinks quickly, is durable, and doesn’t retain odors or flavors. Glass shakers let you see the contents, which can be fun and helpful, but they are more fragile. Plastic shakers are lightweight and less expensive, but they may not last as long and can sometimes absorb flavors. If you want something sturdy and professional, go for stainless steel. If you like to see your drink as you shake, glass might be appealing, but handle it with care.
Capacity
Shakers come in different sizes, usually ranging from about 12 to 28 ounces. Smaller shakers (12-16 ounces) are good for making one drink at a time, while larger ones (24-28 ounces) are better for making multiple drinks at once. If you usually make drinks just for yourself or one other person, a smaller shaker is easier to handle. If you often entertain guests or want to mix several drinks at once, a larger shaker will save you time.
Ease of Cleaning
Some shakers are easier to clean than others. Shakers with fewer parts, like the Boston shaker, are simple to rinse out, while Cobbler shakers have more pieces that can trap liquid or residue. Dishwasher-safe shakers are convenient if you want to avoid hand washing. If you value quick cleanup, look for a shaker with smooth surfaces and minimal parts, and check if it’s dishwasher safe.
Seal and Leak Resistance
A good shaker should seal tightly to prevent leaks while shaking. Some shakers, especially cheaper or poorly made ones, can leak or be difficult to open after shaking. If you’re new to shaking cocktails, look for a shaker with a reputation for a secure but easy-to-open seal. Testing the fit before buying, if possible, can help you avoid frustration.
Grip and Comfort
The shape and texture of a shaker affect how comfortable it is to hold and shake, especially if your hands get wet or cold. Some shakers have a textured or rubberized grip, while others are smooth. If you have smaller hands or plan to make many drinks in a row, look for a shaker that feels comfortable and secure in your grip.
