A Guide to Selecting the Best Carry On Luggages

Choosing the right carry-on luggage can make your travel experience much smoother and more enjoyable. The best carry-on for you depends on your travel habits, the airlines you use, and your personal preferences for organization and style. It's important to consider how often you travel, what you typically pack, and whether you prefer to roll your bag or carry it. By understanding the key features and specifications, you can find a carry-on that fits your needs and makes your trips easier.

Size and Dimensions

Size and dimensions refer to the physical measurements of the luggage, including height, width, and depth. This is crucial because airlines have strict rules about the maximum size allowed for carry-on bags. Generally, carry-ons range from about 18 to 22 inches in height. Smaller bags (18-20 inches) are easier to fit in overhead bins and are ideal for short trips or airlines with tighter restrictions. Larger carry-ons (21-22 inches) offer more packing space but may not fit on all airlines, especially international or budget carriers. To pick the right size, check the airlines you use most often and choose a bag that fits their requirements while still holding what you need for your typical trip.

Weight

Weight refers to how heavy the luggage is when empty. Lighter bags are easier to lift into overhead bins and help you avoid exceeding airline weight limits, especially if you tend to pack heavy. Carry-ons can range from under 5 pounds (very lightweight) to over 8 pounds (heavier, often due to extra features or materials). If you struggle with lifting or want to maximize what you can pack, look for a lightweight option. If durability or extra features are more important, a slightly heavier bag may be worth it.

Material

Material is what the luggage is made from, usually either hard-shell (polycarbonate, ABS, aluminum) or soft-shell (nylon, polyester, fabric blends). Hard-shell bags offer better protection for fragile items and are more water-resistant, but can be less flexible when packing. Soft-shell bags are lighter, can expand, and often have more external pockets, making them easier to squeeze into tight spaces. If you carry delicate items or travel in wet conditions, a hard-shell may be best. If you value flexibility and extra pockets, a soft-shell is a good choice.

Wheels

Wheels determine how easily you can move your luggage. There are two main types: two-wheel (rollers) and four-wheel (spinners). Two-wheel bags are better for rough surfaces and pulling behind you, while four-wheel spinners can be pushed or pulled in any direction and are easier to maneuver in tight spaces like airplane aisles. If you often walk long distances or on uneven ground, two wheels may be better. If you want easy movement in airports and hotels, four wheels are more convenient.

Handles

Handles include the main telescoping handle and any side or top handles. A good telescoping handle should feel sturdy and adjust to your height. Extra handles make it easier to lift the bag into overhead bins or car trunks. If you’re tall or short, check that the handle extends to a comfortable length. If you often need to lift your bag, look for well-padded side and top handles.

Compartments and Organization

This refers to the number and type of pockets, dividers, and sections inside and outside the bag. More compartments help keep your items organized and easy to access, while a simple interior gives you more space for larger items. If you like to keep things separated (like shoes, electronics, or toiletries), look for a bag with multiple pockets and dividers. If you prefer to pack everything together or use packing cubes, a simpler interior may work better.

Expandability

Expandability means the bag can be unzipped to create extra space. This is useful if you sometimes return with more than you left with, or if you need flexibility for different trip lengths. However, expanded bags may not fit in overhead bins or meet airline size limits. If you want the option to pack more, choose an expandable bag, but be mindful of size restrictions when expanded.

Security Features

Security features include built-in locks, lockable zippers, and reinforced zippers or seams. Some bags have TSA-approved locks, which allow airport security to open your bag without damaging it. If you carry valuables or travel to places where theft is a concern, look for these features. If security is less of a worry, you may not need advanced locks.
