Head Size
Head size refers to the area of the racquet's stringed surface. Head sizes are usually divided into midsize (85-97 sq in), midplus (98-104 sq in), and oversize (105+ sq in). For beginners, an oversize head (105 sq in or more) is often best because it is more forgiving and helps you make solid contact with the ball even if your swing isn't perfect.
Weight
The weight of a racquet affects how easy it is to swing and how much power you can generate. Lighter racquets (around 9-10 ounces) are easier to handle and maneuver, making them ideal for beginners who are still building strength and technique. Heavier racquets (over 11 ounces) offer more stability and power but can be harder to control and may cause fatigue. As a beginner, a lighter racquet will help you play longer and focus on learning proper strokes without getting tired quickly.
Balance
Balance describes how the racquet's weight is distributed. A head-light racquet has more weight in the handle, making it easier to control and maneuver, while a head-heavy racquet has more weight in the head, providing more power. Even-balance racquets try to offer a mix of both. Beginners usually benefit from a slightly head-heavy or even-balance racquet, as these provide a good combination of power and control without being too difficult to handle.
Grip Size
Grip size is the circumference of the racquet handle. The right grip size helps you hold the racquet comfortably and avoid hand or wrist injuries. Grip sizes are measured in inches or millimeters, typically ranging from 4 to 4 5/8 inches. To find your ideal grip size, hold the racquet and check if there is about a finger's width of space between your fingers and palm. If the grip is too small or too large, it can make playing uncomfortable and affect your control. Beginners should take the time to try different grip sizes to find what feels best in their hand.
String Pattern
String pattern refers to how the strings are arranged on the racquet. An open string pattern (fewer strings, like 16x19) gives you more power and spin, while a dense string pattern (more strings, like 18x20) offers more control and durability. For beginners, an open string pattern is usually better because it makes it easier to hit the ball with power and spin, helping you enjoy the game and improve your skills.
